• Julia - What Are You Playing With?

When she was about 10 months old, I finally got tired of the hassle of the infant tub for Julia and started just tossing her in the big people bathtub. (She’s our first, it took me a while to be brave enough to move her past a lot of the infant safeguards.) She only got about three inches of water to play around in, but she loved it! So I told my husband on Sunday that we needed to get some pictures of our bathing beauty. We made plans to give her a bath after lunch (the usual time). She had her bath and looked super cute, but it wasn’t after lunch …

After she woke up from her morning nap, Julia usually played in her crib for a while. She talked to the bumpers, pulled up on the sides to look at the things on the floor, played with her lamb, threw her pacifiers around … that sort of thing. The whole time she kept up a sort of laughing babble that sounded a little bit like it could be a conversation if only we spoke her language. On weekends we would often turn on our video monitor and just watch her entertain herself. That Sunday my husband flipped it on and was laughing as Julia crawled from one end of her crib to the other over and over. I asked what she was doing and he said, “She’s got two dark things that she throws back and forth.” I said, “Oh, her pacifiers” and went over to watch. I tried to get a closer view and realized something. I took off running towards Julia’s room while Dave called after me, “What? What did you see?” I couldn’t answer because my brain just wouldn’t wrap itself around the truth. I burst into her room and saw it–diaper discarded at one end of the crib and my bare butt daughter giggling at the other end as she flung her poo around like a delighted little monkey.

I grabbed her and handed her off to Dave to dump in the bath (so happy it happened when he was home!) while I took care of the things in the crib. He cleaned her up, ran new bath water and let her play while we took pictures.

We were so grossed out, we didn’t take any pictures of the crib or our poo-covered darling, but here she is playing all cleaned up.
